Ni Mittiye – Lyrics Meaning in English – Ranjit Bawa
The song mirrors the cyclical nature of life and death, from being conceived in the womb to coming into this world (birth) and at last getting mixed in the soil after passing away (i.e., dying). While listening to the song, we came across different forms of soil: clay, mud, wet soil, and ashes. And how soil is used by humans in their everyday lives. For instance, the pot (made of clay) that is used to fill water is used as an instrument; the hands, grandparents, and young ones—the flesh and bones—are symbolic to soil in that at the end of the cycle one will lose the skin and bones will turn into ashes; the toys—made of sand or wood—are again allegorical to soil in that when termites eat wood what is left behind is dust. Therefore, a human being is nothing but soil. That’s why the lyricist didn’t name everything or anyone with their particular name but insisted on narrating with soil. At the end, we even heard the first cry of a newborn from a random house, which denotes that the cycle goes on; if somewhere a life is lost, then a few miles away, new life has also come into this world.

Mitti da ikk ghada banake
Mitti de hatthan naal vajaa ke
Making a pot of clay
And playing it with soil hands
Oh mitti da ikk ghada banake
Te mitti de hatthan naal vajaa ke
Oh mitti mitti nu zindagi wala
Lagge geet sunaun ni mittiye
Making a pot of clay
And playing it with soil hands
Soil started singing to another soil
The song of life, oh soil!
Tere bina mera kaun ni mittiye
Tere bina mera kaun
Tere bina mera kaun ni mittiye
Tere bina mera kaun
Who else do I have except you, oh soil!
